SUMMARY:MCCSC Academy of Science & Entrepreneurship solar projects
DESCRIPTION:SIREN participated in the Academy’s school-wide\, week-long Sustainability Marketing project\, sponsored by Department of Economic and Sustainable Development.  One group of students did a survey in support of the Bloomington Solarize campaign.  Another group explored the environmental and financial savings that Templeton Elementary School had realized by converting to LEDs and installing a solar system – roughly a 30% reduction in costs. Based on this data\, they projected the savings that the city’s three high schools could realize by making the same changes.

DESCRIPTION:SIREN is one of nine local environmental groups sponsoring a program in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. at the Buskirk Chumley Theater on January 15 from 5-7 pm. The program will consist of a  showing of the film Time to Choose followed by a brief introduction of the groups working locally to mitigate climate change and what they are doing. Carrie Newcomer will lead the audience in singing “If not now\, tell me when” which has become SIREN’s anthem. DESCRIPTION:We are excited to share this external announcement: The Interfaith Community of Environmentalist Youth (ICEY) is hosting a movie night on Saturday\, November 14th 6 PM\, at the First United Church of Bloomington. They will be serving soup and sandwiches\, and showing the critically acclaimed documentary The Merchants of Doubt. This documentary\, which is mainly shown at film festivals\, is based on the book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway\, and reveals the truth about the “scientists” who sought to mislead the American public on many issues\, including cigarette smoke and climate change.  Admission to the event is just five dollars\, with food available for purchase. See the official announcement (PDF) for more details. \n\nNote that this event is intended to allow ICEY to raise funds to pay for another event named YES (Youth Empowering Sustainability): A Statewide Environmental Kickoff. This event will include workshops on weatherizing and environmental leadership\, with a larger goal of kicking off ICEY chapters across the state of Indiana.
